Biography

The works of Marius van Zandwijk are best described as paintings of inconvenient places. His works explore how his experiences of (social - cultural) inconvenience at  places relate to more collective stories. Recently, the complexity and changing intertwining of nature and culture emerged as major theme from this research.

In his works questions about remembrance are implied. Like reality, most works contain multiple narratives. Often narratives are juxtaposed in his works. For example: can we be in control of something uncontrollable?

“I can see reflections of a place: hear a street, see a dune, walk a mountain. I can study the history. I want to have experienced it emotionally. Doubt about what a place is or can be. How does engaging work for me? How do we connect to each other and society?”

Marius’ background is Fine Arts at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He also holds a degree in public administration. Working in this field brings another perspective to his fascinations of multiple narratives and the relationship between the individual and collective.
